WHAT IS CAROTID DOPPLER?

A Carotid Doppler Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test used to examine the arteries in the neck to detect plaque, arterial blockage, or Coronary Artery Disease. This scan helps determine the risk of stroke in early stages and devise preventive measures.

HOW IS A CAROTID SCAN PERFORMED?

The Carotid Doppler USG is a completely safe and painless test that uses high-frequency sound waves to examine blood flow through the Carotid arteries. The sonographer applies a small amount of gel to both sides of your neck, and a handheld transducer is gently moved across the area to capture detailed images. The device records the ultrasound signals and produces clear visuals of the arteries and any blood-flow abnormalities in real time.

WHY IS A CAROTID ARTERY DOPPLER DONE?

A Carotid Doppler Ultrasound Scan is performed to detect changes in normal blood flow through the Carotid arteries. It helps identify the cardiac issues early before they cause complications such as:

  • Narrowing or Blockages in the Neck Arteries

Carotid Dopplers identify any narrowing or obstruction in the arteries, helping spot changes that restrict the normal blood flow to the brain.
  • Plaque Build-Up

This Doppler scan shows fatty deposits along the carotid artery walls, helping detect plaque that can increase the risk of stroke.
  • Blood Flow Abnormalities

The Carotid Doppler Scan evaluates the passage of blood to detect any turbulence or reduced flow that may signal underlying cardiovascular issues.
  • Stroke

A constant narrowing or plaque build-up in the arteries of the neck can significantly raise the risk of stroke or other circulatory system complications.

FAQs

The arteries in the neck that supply oxygen-rich blood to your brain are known as the Carotid arteries.

Carotid artery disease often shows no symptoms until it becomes serious enough to reduce blood supply to the brain. Common signs include chest pain, blurred vision, fatigue, dizziness, unexplained weakness, difficulty speaking, and symptoms of a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA).

A Carotid artery test is non-invasive and does not cause dizziness. However, symptoms that arise during the test usually relate to some underlying conditions.

A private Carotid Doppler scan usually costs between £250 to £400 in London, depending on the clinic facilities and reporting.

A positive result indicates reduced blood flow or narrowing, and your clinician will recommend further tests or treatment based on severity.

Mild blockage can be managed with medicines; however, if the blockage is very complicated, your cardiologist may suggest Carotid angioplasty or stenting.
